An Interview with Esa Koski, Executive VP at EMBA Machinery AB
In October at FEFCO 2021 we talked with Esa Koski, Executive Vice President at EMBA Machinery AB about advantages of their equipment and what possibilities it can bring to converters.
How did the idea come to make the big-box EMBA machine?
■ It is a natural step in our Ultima technical platform strategy. EMBA has transformed the machine portfolio to a standardised range with previously sizes 175 QS Ultima, 215 QS Ultima and 245 QS Ultima on the market. It was a logical step to introduce the 295 QS Ultima to cover the sheet sizes up to 2900 mm in width.
Productivity and quality expectations?
■ Besides the outstanding output, the 295 QS Ultima has all the features and benefits recognized in the other Ultima machines like quick-set, true non-crush converting technology, four shaft slotter featuring the two sheets converting in one revolution doubling output, up to six printing units with either rubber doctor rolls or closed chamber doctor blade system and naturally, for this size of machine, the well proven heavy duty bottom die-cutter.
Benefits for operators, owners?
■ Since all EMBA machines are built on Ultima technical platform operators are able to easily float between different machine sizes in the plant. Also, from a maintenance and spare parts availability point of view the standardized machine concept offer cost efficient planning capabilities in daily manufacturing operations.
Sold outs?
■ The 295 QS Ultima was launched during FEFCO in October 2021 and we have already two shipments scheduled. The machine will be in serial production from Q3 2023.
What advantages does the new EMBA machine offer over other manufacturers equipment?
■ With our true non-crush converting to increase box strength and allow paper grammage reduction, the 295 QS Ultima offers a great potential for better sustainability also to the larger box operations in the 2,9 meter machine segment.


And, with its energy efficiency optimization through fully re-generative servo motion control with power factor correction, it provides much better energy efficiency compared to conventional machines.
Our focus is customer-driven development, and as always it is important for us to provide the market with the best, and requested, solutions. Given the response we have received since the launch, the 295 QS Ultima is certainly a welcome contribution to the market.
